The last-page jam is one of the more peculiar printer faults — everything goes smoothly through 19 pages of a 20-page print job, and then the final sheet crumples against the exit mechanism. If you're seeing this pattern consistently, it's not random. There are two primary causes, and diagnosing which one you're dealing with is straightforward.
Why It's Always the Last Page
For a jam to occur specifically at the last page, something has to change at that point. In a printer with no paper left in the tray after the last sheet is fed, the feed rollers spin without gripping another sheet — they lose resistance. This changes the tension dynamics in the paper path just as the last page is trying to exit.
This is why the two most common culprits are the exit rollers (which pull the paper out) or the exit sensor (which tells the printer when a sheet has cleared the mechanism). If either is failing, the last page is where it shows.
Cause 1: Worn Exit Rollers
Exit rollers are rubber rollers positioned near the paper output. They grip the printed sheet and pull it the final distance out of the printer. Over time, rubber hardens and loses grip — particularly in environments with low humidity or heavy dust. When grip decreases, the rollers may fail to pull the last sheet through completely, leaving it partially in the paper path where it jams.
How to diagnose it: Open the printer's rear or top access panel and locate the exit roller assembly. Look at the rubber surface of the rollers — if it appears smooth, hard, or glassy rather than slightly tacky and textured, wear is the likely cause.
Temporary fix: Wipe the rollers with a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, which can temporarily restore some grip by cleaning built-up paper dust from the surface. This typically lasts for a few weeks before the problem returns.
Permanent fix: Replace the exit rollers. Most laser printers have roller replacement kits available as consumables. The process is usually straightforward — consult your printer's service manual or the manufacturer's parts site for the correct part number.
Cause 2: A Misbehaving Exit Sensor
The exit sensor is a small optical or mechanical flag that the paper depresses as it exits. The printer uses this to confirm each sheet has cleared the mechanism before stopping. If the sensor sticks in the "paper present" position, the printer thinks the last sheet hasn't exited and may activate the paper transport in a way that causes a jam.
How to diagnose it: With the printer powered off, manually move the exit sensor flag with a finger or a plastic tool. It should move freely and spring back to its default position. If it sticks, feels stiff, or doesn't return cleanly, the sensor flag is the problem.
Fix: Clean around the sensor flag with a dry soft brush to remove paper dust, which is the most common cause of sticking. If the flag itself is physically bent or broken, the sensor assembly will need to be replaced.
Other Things to Check
If neither of the above resolves the problem, consider these additional factors:
- Paper type: Some paper types (particularly coated, glossy, or lightweight) handle differently through the exit mechanism. If the jam only occurs with a specific paper type, try standard 80gsm plain paper and see if the pattern changes.
- Overloaded output tray: If the output tray is full and paper has stacked too high, it can interfere with the exit mechanism. Clear the tray and test again.
- Partial paper fragments: A tiny fragment of paper from a previous jam can obstruct the exit sensor or rollers without being visible at a glance. Inspect the exit mechanism area thoroughly with a torch.
