A wireless printer that keeps disappearing from the network is one of the most maddening recurring tech problems in a home or small office. It works, then it doesn't, then it does again for a while, then it's gone. The underlying causes are almost always one of three things — and each has a permanent fix.

The Three Root Causes

Before working through solutions, it helps to understand the three most common causes of wireless printer dropout:

  1. IP address conflicts — the printer's network address changes after a router restart, or another device takes its address
  2. Aggressive power-saving settings — the printer's wireless hardware powers down to save energy and doesn't reliably reconnect
  3. Router and firmware issues — certain router configurations actively disconnect idle wireless devices

Fix 1: Assign a Static IP Address

This resolves IP conflict issues permanently. Most routers assign IP addresses dynamically — meaning they can change. If a printer relies on a dynamically assigned address, it can become unreachable when the address changes after a router restart or network change.

The solution is to assign your printer a fixed (static) IP address. This can be done in two ways:

Via the router (preferred): Log into your router's admin panel (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Find the DHCP reservation or "static IP assignment" section. Find your printer in the connected devices list, and reserve its current IP address for its MAC address. The printer will always receive the same address from the router.

Via the printer: Most printers have a network settings menu where you can set the IP address manually. Set it to an address outside your router's DHCP range (to avoid conflicts). For example, if your router assigns 192.168.1.100–200, set the printer to 192.168.1.50.

Fix 2: Disable Wireless Power Saving on the Printer

Printer manufacturers often enable aggressive power-saving settings by default. These settings cut wireless power after a period of inactivity — which looks exactly like the printer dropping off the network. When you try to print, the wireless takes too long to wake up and the computer gives up, reporting the printer as offline.

Navigate to the printer's settings menu (either on the printer's touchscreen or through its embedded web server). Look for settings labelled "Sleep Mode", "Wireless Timeout", "Power Save", or "Auto Off". Disable automatic wireless power-off, or set the sleep timeout to a longer period.

Fix 3: Connect to the 2.4 GHz Band Specifically

Most modern routers broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. Many printers — particularly older models — only support 2.4 GHz. If your router uses a single SSID (network name) for both bands, the router may occasionally push the printer toward the 5 GHz band, where it cannot connect.

Create a separate SSID specifically for the 2.4 GHz band in your router settings, and connect the printer to that network. This eliminates band-switching as a source of dropouts.

Fix 4: Update the Router Firmware

Some router firmware versions have known bugs that cause idle wireless clients (including printers) to be disconnected more aggressively than intended. Check your router manufacturer's support site for firmware updates and apply any that are available. This is particularly relevant if the issue started appearing after a router auto-update.

Fix 5: Update the Printer's Firmware

Printer manufacturers periodically release firmware updates that address wireless stability issues. Check the printer's settings menu for a firmware update option, or visit the manufacturer's support site and search for your model number to find available firmware.

Fix 6: Reinstall the Printer on Your Computer

If the printer's IP address has changed since you first set it up, your computer may still be trying to connect to the old address. Remove the printer from your system (Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → Printers & Scanners → Remove) and add it again once you've assigned it a static IP. This ensures the connection reference is correct.

Quick diagnostic: If the printer consistently drops off after a specific period of inactivity (e.g. always offline in the morning after being unused overnight), power-saving settings are the most likely cause. If it drops randomly, including during active use periods, IP conflicts or router firmware are more likely.
